Why? The benefits of placenta encapsulation may include reduced postpartum bleeding, increased energy, increased milk supply, balanced hormones/mood, and a reduced occurrence of postpartum depression.

What’s the research say? Although there is a growing amount of research regarding placenta encapsulation or placentophagy, it is not currently an evidenced based practice. This isn’t because it has been proven to not be helpful, it’s because there isn’t a body of evidence to say much about it at all. Here are some articles you may find helpful.

I am GBS positive, can my placenta be encapsulated? GBS or Group Beta Strep, is a bacterium pregnant women get tested for during pregnancy. If you are GBS positive your placenta can be encapsulated if you receive an appropriate antibiotic treatment. If you are GBS positive and you do not receive antibiotic treatment, I cannot encapsulate your placenta. For more information, click the link below.

What is the law about taking my placenta home? In the state of Texas, all hospitals are required by law to release placentas. This means that no matter where you choose to birth your baby – your placenta is yours to keep.
